Moist Von Liptwig of Going Postal is in trouble again due to "restlessness" - but also because Vetinari has a new job for him. This time the Patrician wants him to restructure Bank of Ankh-Morpork. Veterans among the bank’s employees would not like rock the boat when some other people would be much more interested in advancing their own schemes. And some of the owners of the bank are not at all happy that somebody is going to ”interfere” with their family business.
In the process Lipwig ends up creating a new form of currency (I probably don’t have to tell you what) and ecomony not based on gold standard (of ambulatory kind). However, shadows of his past threaten him again (thought not that seriously in the end). And when one central employee of the bank sort of disappears, there is the crisis for this tale.
One side aspect is the golems being analogues to automatisation and robotisation. There is also clear analogy of mad scientists and economists who think that their mathematical models control the world economy. Well, at least not for the better.
