How to build a mind

Igor Aleksander - How to Build a Mind

This is repost from LJ

Igor Aleksander is a South-African-born British engineer and cybernetist. At the time of writing this book, he was a Professor of Neural Engineering Systems at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. The main theme of this book is what is consciousness and can we build a conscious machine.

Aleksander has been studying artificial intelligence and neural networks, primarily trying to make machines to understand what they see and, in turn, trying to understand how the human mind works. What Aleksander tells about his career concentrates on various experimental projects and mechanism, the funding problems and wherever he changed position. At the same time he tracks the path of the different attitudes and contemporary fashionab in the AI research.

But because he recognizes that the subject of consciousness is philosophical (he says that philosophers have disliked him because he intrudes in the their "territory") he also writes about fictional discussion with philosophers like Miletus, Aristotle and Wittgenstein. And a fictional TV-show with idiotic questions.

One important point is the fact that AI he is studying are not potential Terminators; the idea of revolt of robots assumes that machines would also have very human hunger for power and ambitions. That people give their machine enemies very human attributes they do not have.

(Thought machines can be built to serve ambitions of somebody else).
